Tuban Mosque

PROJECT BACKGROUND

2022

A mosque does not need to imitate Arabic architectural styles to be sacred. A place of prayer can exist anywhere—as long as it is pure, clean, and holy. The Tuban Mosque challenges conventional forms by redefining what a contemporary house of worship can look like while honoring the spiritual purpose it serves.

Located in the heart of a rice paddy field along the northern Java corridor, this mosque was envisioned as a landmark—a spiritual rest stop for travelers journeying across the island, from West Java to East Java. Its placement in a rural, open landscape amplifies its visual and symbolic presence.

The design emphasizes divine scale, curating an architectural experience that evokes humility. As worshippers seek a modest 150cm x 70cm space to bow and surrender in prayer, the grandeur of the spatial volume around them reinforces a sense of awe and closeness to the Creator. The mosque becomes a narrative vessel—where people are reminded of how small they are in the presence of something infinitely greater.

Material selection plays a vital role in reinforcing the mosque’s identity as a beacon. Every finish is chosen to ensure the structure stands out—without overwhelming its serene, natural surroundings. The result is a harmonious coexistence between architecture and landscape, form and faith, monumentality and humility.
