The Moss

PROJECT BACKGROUND

2022

The Moss draws its name and inspiration from the organic relationship between moss and the rugged surfaces it clings to—stone, earth, and timeworn terrain. Just like moss growing freely across unpredictable landscapes, the design seeks to mimic this natural spontaneity through a deconstructivist architectural approach.

Guided by the principles of deconstructivism, the project disrupts conventional architectural order. The X, Y, and Z axes are deliberately offset and fragmented, resulting in dynamic spatial sequences and a sense of constant discovery. The outcome is a vibrant, multi-dimensional space that defies expectations—just like nature itself.

Located in Canggu, Bali, this project was initially developed as a concept for a tender process. Although it wasn’t built, The Moss became a significant part of Grassociates’ design DNA and now lives on as a reference in the Grassociates Library of identity projects.

At its core, The Moss explores the idea of personal transformation. Like the feeling of stepping into the unknown—often uncomfortable at first—new environments can become places of comfort, growth, and fulfillment. The Moss represents that personal “hot spot”: a space where discomfort gives way to inspiration, and change leads to clarity.
