Niscala

PROJECT BACKGROUND

2024

Niscala is a renovation project located in Padang, centered around the historic Bumi Minang Hotel. This old hotel carries a profound story—marked by tragedy but also resilience, as it is the sole building to have survived not just one, but two massive earthquakes in Indonesia. The building’s longevity is a testament to the critical importance of well-calculated and robust structural design.

Our client requested a transformation of the hotel’s façade into a more modern and distinctive expression, one that stands apart from other hotels in the area. The name Niscala embodies the core concept of the design, meaning “immovable” or “steady.” This idea is brought to life through a façade that mimics a giant tree trunk, symbolizing strength and endurance.

The design uses vertical aluminum composite panels with curved profiles and vertical orientations, creating a bold and unique texture that evokes the natural lines of tree bark. This distinctive façade not only reflects the building’s steadfast history but also gives it a contemporary identity that commands attention.
